The 2019 American Rental Association Customer Needs Study found that 93% of professional contractors rented equipment at least once in the past year with 52% of these contractors planning to increase their use of rentals instead of buying equipment. The study pointed out several reasons for this trend - 45% said renting was more cost-effective than purchasing, 43% mentioned they needed equipment right away but didn’t want to buy it, while another 43% only equipment occasionally and for short periods. Convenience and business relationships mattered too, with 29% finding a nearby rental store helpful and 29% appreciating a good relationship with their rental provider. Other reasons included limited storage space (28%), wanting to avoid big expenses and maintenance (27%), needing more equipment than owned in their current fleet (25%), and equipment purchase not being an affordable option (24%).
These findings clearly show that many contractors prefer renting equipment over buying. This approach better suits their financial strategies and operational needs. Contractors depend greatly on a reliable rental partner who can provide the needed equipment efficiently and at a reasonable cost, helping them complete projects successfully while staying within budget limits.
